I used vice grips to squeeze one end of the pin together to make it a little more narrow and was able to get it in far enough to hammer it straight through to the other side. I was pretty frustrated that it was a little more intuitive.

Yes, most legit backpackers or wilderness hikers or whatever would not learn a lot from this show. But it isn’t really aimed at them. It’s aimed at ordinary people, who, if stranded in one of these situations wouldn’t know what the hell to do. He shows you what to do if stuck in these specific situations. They never say the point of the show is for him to go out and “survive” with no help whatsoever or anything like that. He’s there to teach ordinary people some stuff that could end up saving them. And yes, it’s a tv show, so a lot of it is done to entertain the watchers. And that it does. I don’t care what people say. I love the show!
